The speaker at the October meeting was Tony Brothers who spoke about the history of the University of Wales, Lampeter. He explained that the university was founded in 1822 by the then Bishop of St. David's, Bishop Burgess, who wanted to set up a college for those who could not get into either oxford or Cambridge and who wanted to further their education. "Right from the start Lampeter has offered a full range of subjects and has never been a purely theological college as has often been thought" Mr. Brothers commented. The land for the site was donated by John Stanley Harford, a local landowner, who thought that the college would be good for Lampeter. Following five years for raising money and completing the building work the college was formally opened in April 1827 when it was granted a foundation charter by King George IV. At the end of the meeting the Chairman reminded members that the Christmas Dinner will be held in Newton House on Monday, December 8 and asked those wishing to attend to give their names to the Treasurer no later than the next meeting. The next meeting will be held on November 26 in St Teilo's Church Hall when the speaker will be Gillian Wright whose subject will be "The Heart of Wales Railway Line."
