AN Amman Valley bowling club have urged Carmarthenshire County Council to take action as their green has been repeatedly flooded by heavy downpours.

Cwmaman Bowling Club now face the prospect of being barred from competing in next year’s Carruthers Shield after their scheduled match against Cross Hands was washed out.

Club chairman John Jones claimed the local authority had constantly been asked to clear nearby drains.

Kevin Madge is always on about getting splashpads down in Cwmaman,” he told the Guardian. “He and the council may as well save themselves the money – we already have splashpads here in Cwmaman Park.”

Mr Jones said the club – which was formed 25 years ago – had continually been hit by flooding after heavy rains. “Lots of games are called off every season,” he said. “We had to play away again on Saturday because the green was underwater.

“The green is just not good enough this season. Why? Because they’re just not tackling this ongoing problem.”

Cllr Colin Evans, executive board member for technical services, said there were “historical” problems as the bowling green had not been constructed properly by the former Dinefwr Council.

“It has been explained to the club that the drains are situated underneath a layer of clay so while the drains are adequate the water cannot penetrate to them,” he added.

“We are called to deal with the issue on a regular basis and all we are able to do is spike the ground to help alleviate the surface water by creating an access through the clay to the drains.

“The clay self seals when the green is used or rollered and when we get periods of heavy rain in the bowls season the problem returns.

"We are meeting the Cwmaman Club this week to see what can be done to effect a temporary solution short of a complete rebuild which would be costly and is not budgeted for at this time.”
