AMMANFORD AND DISTRICT PROBUS CLUB – Heavy rain during the club trip to Cardiff on October 3 curtailed the meticulous planning of Derrick Bithray in as much as we could not tour the gardens of Dyfryn House, but we did visit the house itself and the mixed party of members wives and friends did visit the Millennium Centre earlier and had lunch at the Black Pig.

The probus club is fortunate in the excellence of its visiting speakers and at the club meeting on October 17 we had all the ingredients of a Monty Python sketch when president, Viv Preece, introduced a tall attractive, elegant lady in a clerical ‘dog collar’ who had been (or was) a rugby coach and whose Christian name was Felicity. She is, in fact a Methodist Minister in the Carmarthen/Kidwelly circuit with the married name of Felicity Randall, born in Newport, and a descendent of William Haggar, a showman and pioneer in the making of early silent move films at the beginning of the last century.

William Haggar did most of his work on films in South West Wales and the speaker showed some of his films made as early as 1902 to a fascinated club including a film about the arrest and execution of Charles Peace, a notorious criminal of the period, Haggars work deserved to be better known. The name Felicity comes from the Latin ‘Felix’ meaning happiness and she certainly made the club happy by this riveting account of her relative’s work and her infectious humour which Delme Griffiths endorsed and added his own recollections of theatres and cinemas in Llanelly which were probably used to show Haggar’s films.
