Woman archdeacon appointed

4:29pm Friday 25th May 2001

A 49-year-old mother of two has been appointed Lewisham's first woman archdeacon.

Oxford-educated Reverend Christine Hardman will take on her new role, which covers 57 parishes in six deaneries, in September.

She takes over from the Venerable David Atkinson who became Bishop of Thetford earlier this year.

“It is difficult to imagine a more challenging and exciting place to be,” she said.

“The pace of development and change in this area is probably more rapid than anywhere else in the country. My first priority will be to get to know the people of the archdeaconry, and learn about the things they think are important as we work together for God's mission in the world.”

The six deaneries in Lewisham Archdeaconry are Lewisham, East Lewisham, Charlton, Eltham and Mottingham, Plumstead and West Lewisham.

Rev Hardman, who is married with two grown-up daughters, has been vicar of Holy Trinity in Stevenage since 1996 and Rural Dean of Stevenage for the past two years.
