The British public could be set for a new bank holiday if England win the World Cup.

A petition set up last week to get a national holiday on July 16 in celebration of football coming home has received more than 100,000 signatures.

The petition, launched by Liam Betson aided by betting company Oddschecker, has now reached the required level of response to be debated in parliament.

The 2018 World Cup final takes place on Sunday, July 15, and with the Three Lions comfortably into the semi-finals against Croatia, football fans the country over are dreaming of glory.

Should they win, they will be into the final and one game from lifting the World Cup for the first time since 1966.

Oddschecker spokesperson George Elek said: “If football does come home does that mean we too can stay at home?

“The fact that it will now be officially debated in parliament does give the public substantial hope of a day off work after the final.

“That could be the case if this petition comes off, but England do have a couple of games of football to win first.”
