A LITTER bin alongside Llandybie church could actually increase the problem, perplexed community councillors have learnt.
Technical officer Brian James said the county council had decided against placing a bin at that location because it could prove counter-productive.
"They feel it might actually encourage people to leave litter there," he said. "The thinking is that people who see the bin there will leave their litter, even if it's full."
This explanation did not satisfy Cllr Pat Tiddy.
"Surely the county council have a statutory obligation to provide bins and keep the streets clean?" he asked.
But veteran councillor Nesta Price felt the situation was improving.
"Litter in Llandybie is the best it has been for years," she added.
Mr James said anyone wishing to provide a 100-litre floor-mounted bin would have to fork out £150.
