TODAY the Free Press backs The Chesham Society in its campaign to get the town's rail services back on track.

The society is calling for an Aylesbury, Amersham and Chesham service to be put back into the CrossRail project in the face of recent cuts to services on London Underground's Metropolitan Line.

The CrossRail scheme was thought up to provide commuter services through London for parts of Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Essex and Kent to replace London Underground services in areas out of London.

CrossRail, which would provide services straight to the City and West End, is set to go ahead only from Heathrow.

Meanwhile London-bound commuters have faced misery in recent months after cuts to London Underground services from Chesham and Amersham.

Bernard Meldrum, vice chairman of The Chesham Society, said: "All residents, businesses and organisations in this area need to crusade to ensure that we are still included in the CrossRail scheme.

"Without good, frequent and fast train services to London this area's prosperity will go into decline."

The Chesham Society wants commuters and rail users to lobby Stephen Byers, the new Secretary of State for Transport, for Chesham's inclusion in the CrossRail project.
