STUDENTS were celebrating this week after they won financial support to get an imaginative community project off the ground.

Holmer Green Upper School, in Holmer Green, High Wycombe, has been awarded £7,000 as part of Barclays New Futures, the UK's largest education sponsorship programme.

The school can now launch its campaign which aims to combat local crime.

The students will use the money to create a piece of drama designed to raise awareness of the consequences of shoplifting.

The drama will be video-taped for use by police officers on visits to local primary schools. The project will address issues related to shoplifting, intimidation, moral issues and the law.

Lynne Bates, a teacher at the school, said: "All participants will be challenged to consider how shoplifting can undermine their own community."

Holmer Green Upper School is one of 102 schools across the United Kingdom to win a Barclays New Futures award this year. All winning projects had to be student-led and give the participants a chance to develop skills for life, work and citizenship. The winners' initiatives included bullying, improving the environment, promoting healthy living and celebrating diversity.
