RESIDENTS are at their wits end after enduring more than four months of flooding.

Council bosses have now said the problem may continue for another two months until the water level drops.

Buckinghamshire County Council has admitted to being foxed by the problem, having made every effort to remove the water from Pound Lane in Marlow.

They claim that owing to extreme weather conditions ancient springs that have been dormant for more than 30 years are now flowing underneath the estate.

Mike Knight, area officer for Buckinghamshire County Council, said: "This is the most taxing problem this office has faced.

"I have never seen anything like this. The locals are very upset and I can understand that but short term there's not much we can do.

"We are just going to have to wait for the water level to drop and that might not be for a couple of months."

Residents do not believe it is underground springs. They claim the problems began after Cable and Wireless started digging up the road to lay cables.

One resident, who asked not to be named, said: "We are fed up to the back teeth. We have not seen a smile on people's faces for months.

"If this continues our house will be surrounded by water in a few days. It is just awful living with this."

One 80-year-old woman who lives in Trout Close, has been forced to walk round the back of the Pound and down the Henley Road to get into town.

She said: "It is very inconvenient."

A spokesman for Cable and Wireless said: "We are absolutely confident that we are not responsible for the current flooding in Pound Lane. We have every sympathy with the residents."
