CHESHAM could become a fashion Mecca for tourists if a street-wise idea to produce baseball caps bearing the town's name gets a headstart.

The idea, a long-standing trademark of cities such as London and New York, was thought up by Chesham's Town Manager Maggie Cannon. She believes there is a gap in the market for Chesham memorabilia.

Mrs Cannon explained: "I don't know if anyone will want to take it up but it's the sort of thing students might like."

She says such goods could be targeted at summer students and exchange visitors from Chesham's three twin towns.

JPS Stationers, Market Square, Chesham, already sells coasters and table mats bearing historical scenes of Chesham.

But Mrs Cannon thinks these might not cater for all tastes.

"I think we need something a bit more 'today' rather than coasters and cards something for the youngsters."

However, Ray Williams, manager of JPS Stationers, said he was unsure there was a market for the hats and added: "They're not really our sort of thing. I don't see that many tourists."

Chiltern district councillor Mimi Harker (Con, Chesham Bois and Weedon Hill) thought the idea was somewhat pass.

"As a thirty-something living in Chesham Bois, I think it's a bit old hat.

"Yes, tourists and students might wear them but how often do they come to the town?

"Sure it would be very nice but, as a money spinning idea, I'm not sure it will work."

The idea is set to be discussed by town retailers and traders at the next Chesham Partnership Open Meeting at the White Hill Centre, White Hill, Chesham.
