SHOPKEEPER Jackie Wilson has hit back at a councillor's comments that traders are getting a good deal with a new traffic scheme.

Mrs Wilson is among many residents who don't approve of the scheme on The Green, Wooburn Green, which will introduce zebra crossings, speed humps, relocated bus stop, widened pavement and the biggest change of all a one way system.

Councillor Mike Appleyard (Con, The Wooburns) said at a meeting two weeks ago that the scheme had been designed so shops would not lose customers.

"The shopkeepers are getting a good deal," said Cllr Appleyard. "It is a question of what to do."

But Mrs Wilson, owner of The Village Bakery for five years, said this week: "How can I get a good deal? I'm going to have double yellow lines and a roundabout right outside my shop."

After public consultation and meetings some residents are still not happy about the highways department's scheme.

Mrs Wilson added: "It's just the whole thing residents are upset with. All the people want is the paths to be widened and a crossing.

"Originally we were given three options, one to do nothing and the other two were to do something which included a one way system. They worded it in such a way that it left you thinking we must do something, but when they said about the one way system there was no mention of a mini roundabout and speed bumps."

County council highways staff say they are getting fed up with the delays.

Highways officer Ian Duncan explained that since the council had come up with its preferred scheme it had received a petition from residents saying they didn't want it.

Jackie said: "I think he totally and utterly misunderstands the anger and irritation of the people who have been dealing with this. People care about the village so much and this such a big thing."

The plan is due to go to consultation once again in March because of the petition.
