CARING communities have been rewarded with Best Kept Village awards for keeping their environment in top-notch condition.

The Best Kept Village Competition, organised by the Buckinghamshire Association of Local Councils, has just finalised judging for the awards.

Almost 50 villages in the county took part and Amersham Old Town was one of the cup winners with Holmer Green, Princes Risborough and Marlow runners-up for cups.

The competition looks at how residents care for their environment and judges inspect burial grounds, playing fields, community centres, verges as well as the state of notice boards, bus shelters and other public areas.

The final round of judging has just been completed for the 2000 awards and judges say competition was stiff.

Richard Pushman, chairman of the competition, said: "Despite the wet summer, the standard was extremely high and judging was made difficult by the closeness of marks obtained"

Amersham Old Town has been a consistent winner in the competition and took the Michaelis Cup for Best Kept Village with a population of more than 3,000.
