THE much anticipated Marlow Farmers' Market was hailed as a huge success by organisers with hundreds queueing to get their hands on fresh GM-free foods.

The event, on The Causeway, was the first of its kind in the town and attracted 14 local suppliers to sell their wares to Marlovians.

Chief organiser Sally Philp, of New Town Farm, Bisham, said: "It was absolutely brilliant everything I had dreamt it would be. The atmosphere was great and all the stalls were superb."

Goods on offer included beef, chicken, ostrich, parmesan, beer, herbs and authentic Indian sauces.

"We were so busy I had to dash back and top up with the lamb. The people who came were keen to talk to the people who produce the food. They enjoyed knowing where it was coming from."

Mrs Philp said: "The chickens had some feather stubs still on them, the asparagus was all different lengths and the eggs were all different sizes it was all proper food.

"A lady said to me it was lovely to be able to buy food that wasn't in a sterilised presentation box from a totally anonymous source."

Marlow Chamber of Trade and Commerce was instrumental in putting on the market. Its president Colin Berks said: "A number of existing shopkeepers remarked favourably on the general increase to trade. We look forward to the market becoming a permanent feature of the town."

The market will be held each month and the next one is on July 4. Mrs Philp thanked Wycombe District Council for its support.
