LEGAL secretary Audrey Dreher fears that she may have to give up walking to work after another close shave on a High Wycombe junction which she says is a hazard for pedestrians.

Mrs Dreher, 55, is outraged that she may now have to get behind the wheel to travel from her Maybrook Gardens home at the top of Amersham Hill in High Wycombe to her offices in Easton Street which will mean her commitment to the environment may now be compromised.

She said: "It's a disgrace that in a time when the Government are putting out messages to encourage commuters to limit their car usage I am being forced to add to these traffic problems and congestion because of a dangerous road."

She says the Totteridge Road junction with Amersham Hill has become increasingly busy with buses and lorries turning into it from both directions and further down on Station Road which she says poses yet another major risk for pedestrians.

"It is good exercise for me and is great for the area to have one less car on the road but if my life is at risk, and I have had a few close calls, then it is just not worth it," she added. "There is traffic coming at you from all directions. Even the path along the bridge is so narrow with room only for two people to pass. A child needs only to trip and they are in front of a car. It's an absolute hazard."

Mrs Dreher, who has been making the same journey for three years, believes pedestrian crossings at the Totteridge Road junction and across Station Road could be the solution.

A spokesman for the highways department at Buckinghamshire County Council said: "This particular area has not been brought to our attention but we are always willing to listen to any concerns and take suggestions on board. All of our roads are monitored and accident hot-spots noted."
