SHOPMOBILITY has helped to pump thousands of pounds into High Wycombe town centre businesses by providing free wheelchairs to shoppers.

And some wheelchair users from other areas are even boycotting their own town's mobility service in favour of the free service in High Wycombe.

The news was announced by Shopmobility co-ordinator David Griffin at the Newlands car park based charity's AGM last Monday.

Committee members and supporters heard that since the charity opened its doors in 1994 its 1,200 users and groups have spent more than £715,000 in the town centre with membership up by more than 200 in the past year alone.

"Out of almost 300 such services across the country, we are among 15 per cent that do not charge for our wheelchairs. If people continue to support us this is the way it will stay. It is difficult to gauge the financial situation of anyone and it would not do for someone to have to forego their quality of life because they cannot afford to pay," he said.

Figures were collated by asking users to register their purchases while shopping.

He added that almost one third of users come from outside the district from places such as Maidenhead where users must pay.

Shopmobility chairman Bill Pollard said: "High Wycombe businesses may not be aware of how much money has come into the town simply by enabling people to get around. It is an invaluable service for anyone who may find it difficult to get around, whether they have broken their leg or have been disabled since birth."

He also revealed the charity's plans for its next major fundraising event a golf tournament at Harleyford Golf Club, Marlow, in September.

Shopmoblity hopes its success will rival that of this year's first Pancake Race in the town and hope that both fundraisers will establish themselves as major annual events.

"We greatly depend on the work of volunteers and sponsors within the community if we are to continue providing this quality service," added Mr Pollard.
