THE chairman of Wycombe District Council, Bill Jennings, and deputy leader of the county council, Bill Chapple, both say an inquiry is needed into the handling of foot and mouth.

On Wednesday, Cllr Jennings wrote to Margaret Beckett, Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, about the plight of the countryside.

The letter came out of a meeting of Wycombe District Council's Rural Forum, at which farmers expressed their rage at the effects of foot and mouth, and that tourism seemed to be a higher priority than difficulties faced by farmers.

In his letter Cllr Jennings said farmers in the district were gravely concerned about their economic viability.

He asked why the Government had no plans for a public inquiry into the way the crisis was handled.

Cllr Chapple said an inquiry was needed at a meeting of the County Council Network.
