RESIDENTS can pay their council bills with the minimum of disruption under a new scheme.

South Oxfordshire District Council has launched a new 24-hour, seven days a week electronic payment system. Payments can be made using a touch-tone phone or via the internet through the council's website.

Council tax and parking fines can be paid by credit or debit card and business rates by debit card only and will be extended to allow payment of other council bills in the near future.

Nick Hards, cabinet member with responsibility for finance said: "We need to offer customers safe and secure electronic payment facilities and I welcome this new facility."

Telephone payments can be made on 01491 823500. Users will be prompted to enter their account and card details and the payment will be verified and processed securely and automatically.

The internet facility can be accessed at www.southoxon.gov.uk where users will be prompted to enter details and the payment processed.
