CCTV is set to be used to tackle vandalism and other problems in a village trouble spot.

Wakeman Road, in Bourne End, has been a black spot for some time after having problems with litter, vandalism and intimidation and councillors have now announced CCTV could be in operation by the summer.

Representatives from the parish, district and county councils as well as police and residents attended a meeting last month highlighting the problems and discussing how to solve them.

Proposals included replacing public toilets, moving recycling bins, building a youth shelter and the installation of a "modest" CCTV system.

It was felt that any measure to avoid staff feeling intimidated should be actioned as soon as possible.

Parish and county councillor Mike Appleyard told the parish council meeting last week that the system should be operational by summer.

He said: "I have spoken to the manager of the day centre and the library and there is a major clash of ideas.

"At the moment I don't think it's a major issue but I think both are happy that CCTV goes in."

Wooburn parish Cllr Dinnie Hawthorn reminded the council about the dummy CCTV box they installed.

Cllr Appleyard replied: "The last dummy box was knocked down within 48 hours."

The council was reassured that the CCTV system will be situated in a less accessible place.

The next Wakeman Road meeting will take place on June 19.
