ANGRY residents became embroiled in a heated debate with councillors at an annual parish meeting over a proposed one-way system.

Campaigning residents responded angrily when Wooburn parish and Wycombe district councillor John Dalton stood up and gave an annual report on Wooburn Parish Council's highways working party.

Parish and Bucks county councillor Mike Appleyard and Cllr Dalton tried to calm the situation by explaining the position of the working party and the parish but residents remained passionate about the proposed scheme on The Green, Wooburn Green.

Some residents, who are against the scheme for a one-way system, claimed the parish council was not interested in their views and it seemed like the scheme was being "pushed through", even though the working party is not a statutory requirement for the parish.

But Cllr Appleyard explained: "It's all up to the next consultation. I have a preference I have to say, but it is not something that I'm pushing. As far as I'm concerned I'm trying to get a solution that will be the best for all sorts of reasons for improving things on The Green."

The scheme includes speed reduction tables, pedestrian crossings and a one-way system.

Jill Watts, who lives on The Green and organised a petition, said later: "We are not objecting to making The Green safer but how they want to make it safer."

The annual parish meeting took place at The Meadows School on Tuesday and normal service was resumed when chairman Cllr Julia Langley moved the meeting on.

The meeting heard reports from all the parish committees hearing the major issues for Wooburn Parish over the last year.

The Red Lion Pub on The Green, Wooburn Green, was awarded Best Kept Shop Front and runner-up was E Colliass Ltd Butchers on The Parade in Bourne End.
