THE annual Great Rotation Walk has been cancelled for the first time in 26 years because of the foot and mouth virus.

The walk, organised in aid of charities by the Rotary Club of Bourne End and Cookham, is the latest victim of the disease and has had to be postponed.

Ian Fraser, president of the club, said: "We are very disappointed we had to postpone the walk but it is the only sensible and responsible thing to do at the moment."

The annual event, now in its 27th year, covers about ten miles taking in villages, including Wooburn, Bourne End, Cookham, Marlow and Flackwell Heath.

Cyril Witts, press officer for the club, said: "This is the first time in its history that we've had to postpone it.

"We are very disappointed but hopefully the scare will be over by September."

The walk raises thousands of pounds for charity each year and everybody who takes part is allowed to dedicate 60 per cent of their sponsorship money to a charity of their choice.

The other 40 per cent goes to the Rotary Club's charities which this year are Breast Cancer Research and Winged Fellowship, which provide help and support for people caring for their relatives.
