PARENTS are celebrating after their children won the right to go to Sir William Borlase's Grammar School following a lengthy appeal.

But campaigners say it is a hollow victory because only eight of the 30 pupils who are appealing can attend the grammar school in West Street.

The parents have vowed to fight on for other Marlow children who failed to get into the school even though they passed the 11 plus.

This is just the first round of appeals at the popular school - a group of students are currently going through a second round of appeals.

A row erupted amidst claims that 80 out of a total of 120 places were taken up by children living in Berkshire and Oxfordshire - forcing many children from Marlow to travel to a school 25 miles away in Aylesbury.

Verity Walker, spokesman for appeal parents, said: "The parents of those children who have at last been admitted to Sir William Borlase have vowed to keep on fighting on behalf of these other children.

"This is a hollow victory because it is the system that must change."

The county council cannot comment until all appeals have been decided. No one at the school was available for comment.
