HERRIES Preparatory School in Cookham Dean has been awarded a prestigious science grant by the Royal Society.

The school is one of just 45 successful applicants in the UK to win a grant under the Royal Society's Partnership Grants Scheme.

The scheme was established in order for scientists and engineers to share their skills and knowledge with schools.

Herries School has been visited by leading scientist Dr Roger Brugge, who will help the school to undertake a school project.

The project, called The World in a Playground, will investigate how weather conditions in different parts of the world can compare to the school playground.

A spokesperson for the school said: "Dr Brugge has shown us all kinds of meteorological equipment.

"We are very excited at the prospect of using the grant to buy all we need to buy three weather stations of our own."

Sir Robert May, president of the Royal Society, congratulated the school on securing the grant.

He said: "This is an exciting project.

"It will give the pupils a chance to work alongside a professional scientist."
