COUNCILLORS have vowed to clean up the streets of one of the district's most beautiful towns after coming under fire from outraged residents.

Nico Sacchetti, the newly elected Mayor of Beaconsfield, declared his intent to clamp down on the problem after criticism levelled at the former mayor, Malcolm Dunlop.

The new Mayor has been backed in his campaign by his deputy, Graham Smith, and they have written to South Bucks District Council to ask for a meeting.

The cleaning of the streets is the responsibility of the district council, who, Cllr Sacchetti claims, have suffered from a lack of resources to keep the streets of the town free of litter.

"There is a lot of improvement that one can look for with regard to litter in general.

"We would like more bins around and would like to make sure the public realises that litter does not just appear and they do not leave it around."

He added that he had seen several litter bins in the town that were full, and vowed to report all such incidents to the district council.

The clean-up has come in the wake of a debate at the town council annual general meeting, when former mayor Malcolm Dunlop came under fire for his lack of action.

Cllr Dunlop said: "I regard the worst intrusion of litter not to be at pavement level but at street level and I, personally, have taken down 118 unauthorised signs.

"I deny there is a serious litter problem in Beaconsfield on public streets."

A district council spokesman said there would be a meeting between the Town Mayor and a council representative later this month.
