PASSENGER trains will be fitted with a new warning systems in an effort to step up safety.

Thames Trains' programme to fit all its 62 turbo diesel units with a Train Protection and Warning System (TPWS) is already underway at the company's Reading depot.

The company is one of the first to be fitting its trains with TPWS, with a completion date of October this year.

The system will improve train safety and has been tested by Thameslink trains over the past two years.

Keith Ludeman, Managing Director of Thames Trains, said: "TPWS is a proven system that is available now.

"It is reliable and will yet further improve train safety. TPWS is good news. These are real safety benefits that are available now."
