PLANS for a 52 apartment building in the centre of Beaconsfield have met with opposition from councillors.

Taywood Lifestyle Homes, presented its proposals at a meeting of Beaconsfield Town Council, last Thursday.

The proposed block at the old Perkin Elmer site at the rear of Post Office Lane would be four storeys high and include a commercial office and parking for 52 cars.

John Strange, land and planning director of Taywood Lifestyle Homes, said: "We look at very affluent areas to provide an upmarket product for people aged over 55."

He claimed the development would generate a three-fold increase in spending in the town from the site which is currently home to several businesses.

Plans for the flats are still in a very early stage and the presentation was used as a means of gauging reaction to the plans.

Key concerns expressed by the town council included congestion generated by the increased traffic flow and the fact that people would not pay the premium prices expected for the properties if they had only one car parking space per flat.

Cllr John Gorton (Con, North Ward) said: "Post Office Lane is very narrow. Is the road adequate to deal with this level of traffic?"
