MAY I support the understandably disgusted letter (March 20) about girls driving to Wycombe High School.

Bucks County Council's School Travel Strategy, as paragraph 9.19 reads: "Schools will be encouraged to deter sixth form students from driving to school".

Another option, however, is car-sharing but the plan is to reduce car travel to school by eight per cent in the first year after adoption, which (I think!) is 2001-02, and by 12 per cent in the second year (table 32).

I think the opponents of rational road-use are too powerful for this to happen, as they include big commercial interests, but nevertheless, the aim is set out, in print, under the imprimatur of the county council.

Incidentally, a consultation is under way on the County's School Travel Strategy. Phone (01296) 383205 or fax (01296) 382848, or look at website www.buckscc.gov.uk/consult, or it can be seen in the Local Transport Plan in main libraries, especially volume two.

Also on sensible use of the roads, Paul Ryan (Straight Talking, same issue - March 20) could get tea and coffee, perhaps even chocolate or herbal teas, in a lot of pubs now, and there are Ribena, Appeltize, Canada Dry and a whole range of fruit juices. Also there is a non-alcoholic beer, Kaliber and sweet ginger beer.

There is also a "non-alcoholic wine", which Methodists receive at Holy Communion. I am sure Paul's landlord/lady or bar person could get this in if, as I suspect, he is a good "regular".
