GERRARDS Cross saw their chances of qualifying for the finals of the Cressex Summer Hockey League nosedive when they were held to a 2-2 draw against Wycombe Rye A.

Rachel Gelling and Sally Buckley scored for Cross but strikes from Fiona Carthy and Sue Samways dented their qualification hopes.

Chalfont and Amersham took advantage of Cross' failure to take maximum points by improving their own qualification chances with a 2-1 win over the Wycombe Development, who have already qualified.

Chalfont and Amersham raced into a two-goal lead with first half strikes from Jo Peters and Caroline Coates and although Ursula Bristow hit back for Wycombe, Chalfont held on to narrow the gap between them and Gerrards Cross. Their fate will be decided on Friday.

In the other section, everything rested on the final match between Henley and Marlow A. Marlow needed a win to qualify in second place while a draw would do for Henley.

Marlow went ahead through Tracy Finch and held onto their lead until the last five minutes when Serena Hickman, the league's top scorer, brought Henley level and sent them through to the latter stages of the competition.
