CHESS players pitted their wits against each other to prove they were king of the 'check mate'.

Different grades of players and a wide range of ages stopped and started their clocks trying to win an award at the Chess Tournament in Bourne End on Saturday.

George Parker, organiser of the event organiser, which is in its 26th year, said: "The congress went on all day and each player had 45 minutes to make their moves in the five rounds.

"We had lots of players and the youngest was about seven-and-a-half."

There were four chess sections from A to D with A being the strongest players and a team section.

The Tele Tubbies, Andrew Eagle, David Lewis, Keith Farrington and Paul Maddock, the team from BT in Reading, were the winners of the team section.

The winners were: section A was Maxim Devereaux, from Holmer Green, and Jochin Wittmann, from Oxford; section B, Geoff Rasell, of Chalgrove; section C, Derek Birt, from Hayes; and section D, Roy Maddock, from Harrow.
