WITH the school holidays now stretching ahead, may I through your columns appeal to parents in Buckinghamshire to warn their children of the dangers of playing in quarries.

It is vital that everyone understands that if young people play in quarries they could be risking their lives!

During warm summer days and long summer evenings children's natural inquisitiveness can very easily lead them into danger. Quarries and marine aggregate wharves might seem to offer many of the attractions of an adventure playground.

In reality, however, lakes that look inviting to swim in are often very deep and icy cold. Large piles of sand may look like great places to tunnel but can collapse and suffocate a child in seconds.

Children who want to visit quarries will be welcomed if they do so as part of organised schools visits.

I will be happy to introduce teachers to helpful quarry managers who can visit and supply resource packs and videos explaining the dangers. Readers can also find out more on our website at www.qpa.org/playsafe.
