COURIER Gordon Findlay ended up on a path of destruction when his car plummeted down an embankment and crashed into a pensioner's bathroom.

Findlay, 38, of Mole Run, High Wycombe, pleaded guilty to careless and inconsiderate driving and failing to stop after an accident.

He appeared at Wycombe Magistrates Court on Thursday when he admitted he might have been a 'bit of a coward' for walking away from the accident on April 9,this year.

Balbir Seyan, prosecuting, said two policemen went to an incident involving Findlay's BMW at The Pastures, Downley at 10.03pm.

He said Findlay had travelled more than seven metres before hitting flats for elderly residents, then plunging down an embankment.

He said: "The car ended up embedded in a flat. The damage to the flat was very severe. The bathroom wall was demolished and the sink was thrown across the floor."

The court heard Findlay and his passenger left the scene, his passenger climbed out through a window and fled while he sat on the kerb then went to his mother's nearby.

Police tracked him down after checking his car registration.

Findlay said in mitigation: "I came up the hill and hit the kerb and the next thing I knew I was down a ditch and wasn't aware of any damage to a house."

He said: "I phoned the police in the morning. I am guilty of bad driving but the reason I did leave the scene was because I was in shock and went to Mum's house. I did make some mistakes but perhaps I was being a bit of a coward, I just wanted to go home."

He had a drink-related matter on his licence in 1992 and was given three points and a £100 fine. Last week he was fined £250 and given eight points for failing to stop. For careless driving he was fined £250 and his licence endorsed. He was ordered to pay £55 costs.
