TWO teenagers posing as water board workers tricked a pensioner into checking her water before making off with £4 from her purse.
One of the men told the 86-year-old woman, of Windrush Drive, High Wycombe, to turn her water off when the pair called on Wednesday.
When she was distracted the second man stole her purse before they both ran off.
They are thought to be between 14 and 19 years old, white and of slim build.
One had dark hair brushed forward with sharp features and was around 5ft 7ins tall. He wore a navy check shirt and blue trousers.
The second had fair hair brushed forward at the crown and was wearing a dirty white round neck sweatshirt and beige trousers.
A third teenager may have also been with them.
Kate Spark, spokesman for Thames Valley Police, advised pensioners to be cautious with unexpected callers.
She said: "Always ask unexpected callers for identification and be sure to check their ID by calling relevant service or utility before letting them in.
She also warned against anyone keeping large sums of cash in the house.
Witnesses are urged to contact PC Jeff Osborne on 01494 465 888 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
