THE Mayor of High Wycombe is urging residents to back his proposals for speed cameras to be put up at a notorious junction as a public consultation into traffic calming plans gets under way.

Residents' fears about speeding motorists at the junction at Crest Road and Holmers Farm Way in High Wycombe prompted Buckinghamshire County Council to put forward a plan to slow down traffic. It includes a mini roundabout and pedestrian crossing.

But mayor Cllr Nigel Vickery (Lab, Booker and Castlefield) says that speed cameras would solve the problem and thinks that a disused camera in Daws Hill Lane, High Wycombe, should be put up in Crest Road.

"The speed camera on Daws Hill Lane is an incredible waste of a facility as it is sat on the same stretch of road as speed bumps," he said.

"It's well documented that motorists tend to pay more attention to speed cameras. I'm not too keen on roundabouts after an incident when a lorry skidded across a mini roundabout and into my garden a while back."

A spokesman for the county council said: "We may look into speed cameras but nothing concrete has been decided."
