PATIENTS who are recovering from life-threatening illnesses are to receive extra help when they are invited to a follow-up clinic to monitor their progress.

The new service is aimed at patients who spend at least three days in intensive care at Wycombe Hospital.

They will be checked by members of the expanded team at the critical care unit after they have been discharged.

The critical care unit opened at the end of last year following the completion of a £1 million extension and the new monitoring service was launched this month.

Unit director Dr Tim Dexter said: "The aim is to improve the quality of service we provide by identifying ongoing problems and listening to the experiences of patients and their relatives.

"Other centres which have already introduced this service have found it to be an invaluable way of identifying what will help patients most as they continue their recovery."

The care unit currently has six beds for intensive and high dependency care.
