THE Princess Royal is to visit Stoke Mandeville Hospital in April to open the Wooden Spoon Society Family Cancer Care and Haematology Unit.

The unit opened to the public on Monday, and Sister June Wilson OBE, who led the fundraising efforts, is delighted with the results of her work.

Sister Wilson and her co-fundraisers raised more than £1 million between them with events including charity balls and garden parties.

The million pound total included a £300,000 donation from the Wooden Spoon Society.

Sister Wilson said: "It's wonderful the Princess Royal will be coming to open the unit and we are delighted and honoured that she will do this.

"Members of the public played a large part in raising this money and everyone who contributed to the new building needs to be thanked."

The unit brings together cancer care and haematology under one roof and offers a complete holistic treatment for cancer sufferers, including complementary therapy.
