TUBE bosses have scrapped plans to close a station entrance just a day after announcing the move.

The U-turn came after scathing criticism from residents, businesses and councillors.

Last Wednesday London Underground Limited (LUL) said the gate on the northbound platform at Chalfont and Latimer Station had to close after a huge increase in fare dodging and assaults on staff.

The gate has been widely used for a shortcut through the station for years.

But the next day LUL backtracked and said it would review the situation after discussions with local groups and customers.

A spokesman for LUL said: "If the review, which will last several weeks, concludes there is no alternative economic solution, the gate will permanently close."
