WILLIAM Baxter, executive chairman at independent business caterer BaxterSmith, had the chance to meet the Duke of Kent following the company's sponsorship of an award in a national education scheme.

The Edexcel Achievement in Education Awards 2001 ceremony was held last month at the Royal Lancaster Hotel, London, where BaxterSmith sponsored the BTec Higher National Award.

It was won by County Down student Gary Ritchie who is studying building and computer design. He won a £1,000 prize as did his college, North Down and Ards Institute.

Mr Baxter said: "Training and education are vital to the success of UK business and BaxterSmith is committed to promoting their importance.

"We actively encourage our own employees to continue developing their catering skills through training it benefits their careers and it ensures high quality of service for our clients."

BaxterSmith in Market Square, Amersham, has announced it has added £1.3 million to its turnover in the first six weeks of its second year of trading.

Recent new clients include Hiscox Art Cafe in the City of London, and Scottish & Newcastle Retail.

The company now has 21 client sites, more than 300 employees and a £7 million turnover.
