MY heart goes out to your correspondent Mr Spencer Arnott, but I don't think the law is about to help our case any time soon.
I too have become exasperated at the self-importance of those who park partly or wholly on pavements, even where there are double yellow lines, hazard lights flashing as though that somehow condones the act.
Recalling a pledge by Tony Blair when he was elected in 1997 to enact legislation to ban parking on pavements, I asked one of the legal experts at Wycombe District Council when the law came into force.
Unsurprisingly, the pledge seems to have slipped off the agenda, and there is no prospect of such a law in the foreseeable future.
With the reduction in police officers on the beat, and traffic wardens on the streets, even the current limited legal constraints on pavement parking are not being enforced.
So what about Name and Shame?
How about a Prat Parker of the Week piece with a photograph of the best (worst?) example of inconsiderate or dangerous parking, ideally with the registration plate fully visible and legible?
Who knows, it may even make them think twice before they park.
