I REFER to the letter in the BFP (July 27) from officers of Hughenden Parish Council regarding the burial ground and garden of remembrance of Four Ashes.

Their assertion that they are being compassionate and sympathetic to the bereaved people concerned is somewhat wide of the mark.

Indeed the tone of the letter sent to the grave leasers was far from sympathetic indicating that any items the council removed from the graves could not be guaranteed to be returned to their rightful owners.

I wonder also what is deemed to be in bad taste and upsetting to certain people.

Perhaps the council could clarify this.

It is a known fact that many people with loved ones in graves at Four Ashes are deeply upset and angry with the council's cavalier attitude towards them.

If the council wishes to be honest and open regarding its plans for both the burial ground and the garden of remembrance for those whose loved ones have been cremated and who are also deemed to breaking the council's rules it should announce an open meeting for those bereaved to attend including people who live outside Hughenden parish but are nevertheless concerned with this enforcement.

There are several petitions regarding this in circulation including one of 129 names handed to the council.

The council's clerk is phoning people who have supported this spending up to one-and-a-half hours in individual calls to put forward the council's position.

It seems not all councillors are in agreement regarding this unfortunate situation.

Clarification is required.
