STOPPING smoking is hard to do but High Wycombe shoppers have been getting help from the experts.

Several organisations joined together to help people give up smoking which can lead to coronary heart disease, strokes and cancers, the three biggest killers in Wycombe.

Wycombe Primary Care Group, South Buckinghamshire NHS Trust, Wycombe District Council and local pharmacists got together to run courses on giving up smoking to mark No Smoking Day on March 14.

Shoppers got all the help they needed when the first non-smoking event took place outside Boots the Chemist in the Octagon Centre, High Wycombe.

Advisors were on hand to give advice and information to anyone who wanted to quit the habit.

A spokesman for the scheme said: "Stopping smoking is not easy, but it's one of the best things you can do for your health.

"Help from your doctor or nurse can greatly increase your chances of quitting compared with going it alone.

"The aim is to raise awareness of smoking cessation support locally, provide information for smokers who want to quit and invite people to attend the smoking support groups on offer."

A support group for people trying to give up smoking is meeting every Tuesday until April 17 at Bassetsbury Manor, High Wycombe at 7.30pm
