HUNDREDS of people from the Muslim community of High Wycombe enjoyed a march through the streets on Sunday to celebrate the birthday of their prophet Mohammed.

The procession marched from the Mosque in Jubilee Road, to the High Street, into Easton Street, past Wycombe Hospital and back down Abbey Way.

Organiser Mohammad Khan, a founder member of the Islamic Defence Council, said the march was one of the most important in the Muslim calendar.

He added: "We want people to feel they are wanted and valued in this society."

Shahed Tameez, 28, of Miersfield, High Wycombe, said he had come to the march with his family.

He added: "This celebration is very important to us. We have been preparing for this for quite a while now and it's one of the best events of the year."

The march stopped for speeches and prayers by community and religious leaders in the High Street and at Wycombe Hospital.

Spirits were high and one community leader said: "There is a question today.

"Why are the people marching?

"It is not a demonstration, it's a celebration.

"Mohammed was the prophet for all human kind."

Fakhar Ali, from Wycombe Marsh, said: "This march is very important for the community. I have come here with my family today."

Sergeant John Blankenback, High Wycombe town centre officer, said the day had passed very well. He added: "There has been no hint of trouble from anyone.

"From a policing point of view, it is just one of many events and parades that pass through High Wycombe.

"The police are happy to control traffic for all events providing the relevant permission has been sought."
