THE rain managed to hold off for most of the village fete last week, though the churches benefited with people rushing in to shelter when it did rain! There the flowers could be admired and the bell-ringers studied.

The fete had more of a French flavour this year, with oysters from St Pierre being offered for sampling, though I have to say I did not succumb to those particular delights.

Other attractions included a splendid BSE and foot and mouth free cow which was ready for milking, the demonstration beehive, refreshments hot or cold, lots to do and lots to buy.

The fete is a good way of meeting people and catching up with the activities which go to make Lane End a good place to live.

THE bridge club has proved to be so successful that an extra session on a Monday is being put on for a trial period.

The session will be between 7.30pm and about 10.30pm. The cost is the same, £2.50 to include tea and biscuits. Jean on 01494 881357 or Pam on 01628 484127 will give further details, should you need them. Otherwise just turn up on Monday and see for yourself. Beginners welcome.

THE much discussed Youth and Community Centre has got a new lease of life. A new committee has been formed and a site adjacent to the school has been approved of in theory.

This could be your chance to play a major part in how the young people of the village spend their leisure time. You will have the chance to put your ideas forward and perhaps even help to run the centre when it is completed, which might be in the next year if all goes well.

Please contact Dave Furze, the community development officer, 01494 421853 if you would like to know more about the scheme.

LEAOPAG, or Lane End Area Older Persons Action Group to give it its proper name, has its next meeting at the Elim Centre on Wednesday starting at 1pm with soup and bread if you would like some, the meeting proper starting at 1.30pm.

If you would like to join the group, please contact Geoff Brown on 01494 881582 for details.

THE coffee shop on Saturday, June 16, will be in the annexe between 10am and midday.
