ALL Servicemen and Royal British Legion Members are invited to join Lord Lieutenant Sir Nigel Hobbs and High Sheriff Alexander Shepard to honour men conscripted into the National Service.

Three marble plaques will be erected in the towns of Princes Risborough, Marlow and High Wycombe for servicemen conscripted into the Armed Forces between 1947 and 1963.

Councillor Dennis Green first proposed the idea to Wycombe District Council in September 1999.

He said: "We need to remember these young men who were required for compulsory military service under the National Service Acts 1948. They got no recognition from successive Governments and I feel they should be honoured for the sacrifices they made for their country."

High Wycombe will be the first to get a marble plaque on May 20.

National Servicemen and Royal British Legion Members will march from the Swan Theatre's Service Road, High Wycombe to the Parish Church of All Saints for a service. They will then continue to Library Gardens, Queen Victoria Road, where the plaque will be erected.

Marlow's plaque will be placed at the Causeway on May 20 and Princes Risborough will erect a plaque in the Library Gardens on Bell Street, but arrangements have yet to be finalised.
