SOLDIER Dominic Fenney has been slaloming among the best of them and competing against some of the leading skiers in the British Army.

Officer Cadet Dominic, 21, who is in the Exeter University Officer Training Corps, has taken part in the Alpine section of this year's Exercise Spartan Hike, the Land Command, Northern Ireland and Territorial Army Ski Championships, held in the steep-sided valley of Serre Chevalier in the French Alps.

Dominic, from Gerrards Cross, started skiing as a child but found racing a very different experience from recreational skiing.

He said: "This is a test of bravery.

It can be quite scary, but I'm pleased with the way it has gone. I've improved 21 places from last year."

Dominic raced in all the Alpine competitions, including Slalom, Giant Slalom and the heart-stopping downhill events during the two-week exercise.

The skiers ranged from British Army team members to soldiers who had stepped into skis just a few weeks beforehand.
