MY apologies for getting the name of the entertainment incorrect at the Pensioners Voice monthly meeting last Saturday. The members were treated to the enchanting singing voice of Sylvia Harris from Penn; she made it an afternoon to remember for those members present.

I REFERRED last week in this column to the Mayor of High Wycombe, Councillor Nigel Vickery, and the Mayoress Sue Vickery's first Civic Service at All Saints Church. The congregation were stunned when the mayor announced the sudden death of the much respected and well-known Sergeant Bill Snelling of the High Wycombe Police (and the Town Crier). Bill had suffered a stroke and passed away. Everyone present and people all over the town will send their deepest sympathy to Anne, Bill's wife.

ONE of the nicest things about writing our columns is the letters we receive from people whose events we publish. Last week was no exception. Miss Joan Stevens says that at her last tombola and gift stall at High Wycombe Hospital, in which she raises money for the Intensive Care Unit, she says that she received a steady flow of customers all day on the Monday and she enjoyed chatting to her regulars. She raised £160 but hopes to increase this to £200 when she has sold her remaining Beanie Babies. These small toys she says are really extremely popular and children just cannot have enough of them. Joan is very appreciative of the cheques and donations and goods that she receives from local businesses.

Her next tombola and gift stall is on September 27, at the hospital, but I will remind readers nearer the time.

THE Big Band Concert that played for the local Cancer Research Campaign, was much appreciated by the local committee, and they have asked me to extend their grateful thanks for playing for them last week; and also thanks to those who supported the Big Band Concert as on this occasion £280 was raised for the charity.

PUPILS at Pipers Corner School were visited by the Hearing Dogs for Deaf People in morning assembly on Wednesday, May 23. Girls in Hampden House raised £3,000 by hounding the rest of the school with cake sales, mufti days, talent shows and sponsored scavenger hunts, in order to provide a kennel at the training centre.

The Hampden girls, who have previously raised £2,500 to fund the training of dogs, thoroughly enjoyed the visit.
