ALAN Page writes that if Labour wins the election, we will have regional assemblies.
He adds that ghost regional assemblies are already in operation (Letter, May 25).
Yes, and the only choice that we will have is whether our assembly will be appointed, or elected.
The third option not having a regional assembly at all will be excluded.
Sounds familiar?
It is the same weasel approach, that Labour used to impose its "modernisation" of local councils.
And how Heseltine tried to abolish county councils.
Where Heseltine failed, labour intends to succeed.
The Anglo-Saxon shire, and the Norman county, will give way to the Latin Region.
Why? - because Brussels says so.
Another crackpot conspiracy theory?
Ask your local library if they have a copy of "The Voice of the Regions - Quarterly Newsletter of the Committee of the Regions".
Here we have EU insiders, confidently discussing our future among themselves.
So, according to the last issue: "What is significant is that the Committee of the Regions was set up at the same time as this 'European Union', dedicated to the two sides of the coin - heads economic union and tails political union."
Forget about better delivery of public services, or greater local accountability.
How can a huge multi-county region, subordinate to Brussels, possibly be more efficient, or more accountable, than a county council overseen from London?
The true aim is to divide and conquer.
To break up England, set the English against each other, and so ensure that we are less able to resist the coming EU dictatorship.
