A SCHOOL has announced merger plans just a week after being congratulated by the Government's Chief Inspector of Schools for coming off special measures.

William Durrant School in Greenway, Chesham, will combine with Greenway Infant School to create what the former's headteacher, Eliswabeth King, called, "One of the most successful schools in the area".

Problems with unfilled spaces at both schools caused great concern among governors and has led to this week's announcement that a new school will be based at the William Durrant site.

"We also truly believe that children will achieve a lot more if they are not disrupted to change schools during vital years," said Mrs King.

The new combined school will have 210 full-time pupils, and a part-time purpose built nursery for children coming from Greenway Infant School.

Talks are currently under way about new resources and buildings.

"So far we have received positive feedback from parents and we are really excited about the potential of our new school," added Mrs King.

William Durrant School came off special measures in November 1999.

It is hoped that the new school will officially open in September 2002.
