DYNAMIC new signs have gone up in High Wycombe to make it easier for car drivers to find parking places.

The signs, known as dynamic signage, have gone up on the five main roads into the town: London Road, West Wycombe Road, Amersham Hill, Marlow Hill and the A4128 Hughenden Road. They will tell drivers which of the four multi-storey car parks have spaces, are full, nearly full or closed.

The new system works off radio signals sent from a central computer, so there has been no need to dig up the roads to lay communication cables. They start operating in the next two weeks, once the radio signal strength has been finalised.

Until the end of August car park inspectors will put the information in the computer and update it regularly.

Once the system is up and running the signals will come electronically via the car park's vehicle counting system and will be updated continually.

The first car parks to go live electronically will be Newland and Easton Street, then the Dovecot and Swan car parks.

Cllr Bill Bendyshe-Brown, the Wycombe district cabinet member with responsibility for car parks, said dynamic parking would save drivers' time and so should help to make the roads less congested.

Dynamic signage is a joint project between Wycombe District and Buckinghamshire County Councils. The county council is putting in £100,000 and Wycombe district £50,000.
