POSSIBLE names for a new street have been slammed by councillors because they would remind people of an eyesore many would rather forget.

At a meeting of Amersham Town Council's planning and footpaths committee on Monday, councillors considered four options for a street of new staff houses at Amersham Hospital, Old Amersham.

Bosses at Chiltern Hundreds Housing Association, the developers behind the accommodation, had shortlisted Chenies Place, Chenies Road, Misbourne Place or Misbourne Road.

But town councillors were not impressed.

Cllr Davida Allen (Amersham Town) said the last thing anyone wanted was to have a new name involving Chenies as it would remind people of Chenies Tower on Whielden Road, the gloomy, unpopular hospital building.

She said: "We don't want Chenies we've had enough of that wretched Chenies Tower."

Chenies Tower is due for demolition as soon as planning permission is given to redevelop the site.

But developers Taywood Homes has tried and failed twice to come up with a suitable plan to build new flats to replace the tower.

Cllr Martin King (Amersham Town) said he would like to see the road named after a dignitary.

He said: "Is there anyone that we can remember as a good member of the town?"

A spokesman from the Chiltern Hundreds Housing Association said they were waiting for feedback from Amersham Town Council on the shortlisted names.
