ON Saturday I was called away from Wycombe District Council's Policy Away Day because my wife Jean had had accident whilst gardening.
A sharp branch of a shrub had penetrated her eyeball causing considerable bleeding.
Marlow Cottage Hospital advised her to attend the Accident and Emergency Department at Wycombe Hospital and not to drive herself there.
My eldest son, by chance, rang as we were leaving and said he would join us there, bringing refreshments for a long wait.
Imagine his surprise when he arrived at the A & E, as well as ours, when after an hour at the A & E my wife had been seen by a doctor, who diagnosed no serious damage despite a nasty cut on the white of the eye.
She received attention from a nurse and the special ointment required for treatment at home.
Well done A & E. But there's more!
On inquiry whether we had struck it lucky, I was told that the system for dealing with A & E patients had been changed a few weeks prior such that a dedicated doctor, nurse and orderly were dealing with the walking wounded, and another team with ambulance cases.
I can confirm the system is working well.
Many thanks to all concerned.
