TENNIS club chairman Barry Bobbit has hit out at residents who have voiced concern about the creation of two new playing courts for youngsters.

Bosses at the Princes Risborough Lawn Tennis Club, Aylesbury Road, Princes Risborough, are seeking planning permission to turn an area of unused land into two half-size junior courts.

But Mr Bobbit claims the club has come under pressure to withdraw the application.

He explained: "In the 1940s and 50s the club had six courts, now we have three. The area of land we want to use for the two new courts used to be courts so I don't really know why we have to seek permission."

Mr Bobbit said some residents near the club are trying to push the planning department into saying no.

The British Lawn Tennis Association is backing the club's plans with a grant of more than £5,000.Mr Bobbit is especially disappointed the plans have been met with opposition because in the summer months about 55 to 60 children use the club.

He said: "If they get their way this sports programme will be endangered and the children will be deprived of the opportunity to expand their tennis experience. All of this because of the self-interest of a few people."

Wycombe district councillor Dennis Green (Con, Princes Risborough) said he had listened to some residents' concerns about increased noise from new courts . He added: "What both sides need to do is talk with each other about the proposals. That's the way to clear this up."
